CHOOSING GOD – Ending The Domino Effect In Your Family – Daily Devotional
The domino effect is a series of related events occurring as a direct result of one initial event. Some people call it a chain reaction. A few examples of “family dominoes” might include:
- My grandfather was an alcoholic, my father was an alcoholic, and so am I
- Anger has always been an issue in our family
When we think of “family dominoes” two inevitable questions arise: What part(s) of your family rubbed off on you? Just how much of a “chip off the old block” are you – or do you choose to be?
The most amazing thing about the domino effect is that it takes only one domino to start the effect, and only one domino to step out of the line to stop it. Imagine how different your life would be today if your parents had made some different choices when you were a kid.
Yes, you can affect the Domino Effect!
The Bible has more than 200 references to the word chose! One of my favorites is where God says to the people, “I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.” Deuteronomy 30:19 NIV
Today’s families have so many fun choices – hockey, skiing, chess club, school plays, piano lessons and more. . . Likewise, many churches offer a host of faith building choices such as Bible study, small groups, mission trips, summer camps, power life, retreats and more.
With such a plethora of choices available, we need to remember that our children will generally follow our lead. If we like to fish, our kids will most likely enjoy fishing. . . If having a relationship with God is visibly important to us, having a relationship with God will likely be important to them.
Choosing to pray at meals. . . Choosing to pray every night before bed. Choosing to go to church. We must be intentional in our choices, because whatever we choose will indeed affect the domino effect.
“Now Choose life – that you and your children may live.”
