DO YOU PUT GOD IN CHARGE? – Daily Devotional
My brother, his wife and their four little kids were quickly unloading their luggage curbside at the airport. Bulky bags, backpacks and bustling people swarmed like bees near the nest. Tensions were loaded with hurry, traffic and watching the kids.
Suddenly, my 4-year-old nephew waved his arms frantically and yelled as loud as he could, “I don’t know who’s in charge around here, but it’s not me!”
Not me – indeed.
This story popped into my noggin after thinking how Jesus and his disciples walked through the colossal Temple courts (an area larger than 28 football fields). The Bible mentions the Temple’s amazing brilliance and splendor as the disciples exclaimed, “Look, Teacher! What massive stones! What magnificent buildings!” And they were right on.
I can only imagine how shocked the disciples must have been as Jesus replied, “Do you see all these great buildings. Not one stone will be left on another; every one will be thrown down.” Mark 13:1-2
I’ll bet every disciple muttered, “You’ve got to be kidding me.”
But inside this brief story, Jesus claimed that He was greater than any man-made Temple. At the same time, Jesus wisely reminded us that no matter how great the building, how strong the country, or how fortified we have built our financial portfolio, they too will thrown down some day. There is nothing we have ever built, or ever will build, that will last forever.
It is all fleeting, and not one of us in charge. Just as we aren’t in charge of the weather, we don’t even know whether we’ll live for another day.
But unlike my 4-year-old nephew, I do know who is in charge. If you’d like more Jesus and less trouble in your life. . . More of God and less Satan. . .
