FACING THE IMPOSSIBLE – God Still Does the Impossible – Daily Devotional

In the movie, “The Edge,” two men were chased through the mountain wilderness by a giant, man-killing bear.  They were exhausted, starving, freezing and above all else, scared.  The bear growled in the dark woods snarling, roaring – taunting them with fear – while the only thing preventing its attack was the flames of their fire.  “What are we going to do!  What are we going to do!” one of the men cried in desperation.

I know that I’ve had times in my life where I felt desperate – and I’ll bet you have too.  Wrongly accused, worried sick over a family illness or overwhelmed from work.  With all this in mind, imagine David’s hopelessness as he cries to God, “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?” Psalm 13:1 ESV

We can feel David’s pain and inner toil.  It’s as if his mind is swirling into a dark hole of despair as his very next words lament, “How long will I store up anxious concerns within me, agony in my mind every day?”  Psalm 13:2 CSB

Sharing this anguish with David, the brutal honesty and raw feelings he expresses to God – Yes, most of us have been there.  Feeling all alone.  Torn inside out, mind spinning and unsure where to go, what to do, whom to turn to.   We too cry, “What are we going to do, what are we going to do.”

In the movie the main character answers, “We are going to kill the bear” – truly a daunting, frightening and almost unbelievable answer that is almost as terrifying as death itself.

But for David, you and I the answer stands before us, surrounds and holds us.  There is no terror or fear when we, like David, turn back to our source – turn back to the truth.  Back to our God who made us, knows us and truly wants the very best for us.

Just watch David as he cries – even in the middle of his fear – as he cries only two verses later, “I trust in your unfailing love; my heart rejoices in your salvation.  I will sing the LORD’s praise, for he has been good to me. Psalm 13:5-6 NIV

In the middle of our fears and storms, we too, like David can turn once again to God.  Yes – we can turn to God.  Can you hear him calling?  Come to me, be with me, rest with me.  He is calling you right now.
