GOODNESS OF GOD – God is Both Great and Good – Daily Devotional
The goodness of God. Have you ever stopped to think about what makes God not only great, but also good? His greatness is undeniable – he is the mightiest King and Ruler of the universe! He imagined and created everything we’ve ever known.
But God is also good and he teaches us to be good. In fact, the Bible doesn’t demand that we become “great” for God, but it does teach us how to be “good”! Truly, the goodness of God is what makes him so great!
So how does this relate to us? It might be hard to believe at times, but “great people” have lots of unique problems. First, consider the massive amount of effort it takes to become great and to stay at the top. At what expense does greatness occur? It might be hard to believe at times, but “great people” have lots of unique problems.
For example, think about how much is just expected – even demanded – from allegedly great people. I once saw a movie where a worker said these words about his rich boss, “Never feel sorry for a man who owns the plane.” Or consider how enormous the fall must be when a great person of this world gets sick or fails. Perhaps this is one of the reasons that the Bible tells us that goodness (and not greatness) is a fruit of the Spirit.
Over and over, the Bible says that God is good (2 Chr 5:13). Jesus even said, “Only God is truly good” (Lk 18:19). Here, “good” means harmonious, pleasing and delightful. Goodness is acting in accordance to with what is right, true and it is a part of aligned with God’s nature.
Although God calls us to be good, he knows that we will never be perfect when left to ourselves. Instead, he simply calls us to use our the talents that he has blessed us with (Mt 25:14-30) and like using our talents, God wants us to be wise so we can make good choices. When we wisely use our talents, we become the very best versions of ourselves.
But most of all, God wants to fill us with his goodness. The goodness of God will fill us with his goodness if we simply allow God to open our hearts as he pours his Spirit into our lives. It all starts by resting in God’s presence, sitting next to him, and hanging out with God him. so he can Eventually, spending time with God will rub off on us.
Let’s pray: Dear God, thank you for being so good. Thank you for being our good, good Father. Please fill me with your goodness – fill me so I’m overflowing. Fill me abundantly. Fill me so much that I drip your goodness wherever I go. And God, please help me to look around to and see who I know those who could use a touch of your goodness today. Give me the courage to make a call, send a card or to say hello in your mighty, good, good name.
