I know so many people who think that meditation is not a Christian practice, but the Bible talks about meditating on God’s word dozens of times!  This is so exciting and so powerful, that I think we all could learn what this means and get in on the action!

Let’s start with Psalm 1:2 which sets the table for all the Psalms with these great words, “Blessed is he whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2). There’s our word, meditate, right from King David himself.  

And when we go all the way back to the book of Joshua, it says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful” (Joshua 1:8).  

Look at that recipe!  Psalm 1 says if you want to be blessed, and Joshua 1 says if you want to be prosperous and successful, it is so easy. . . Meditate on God’s word day and night.   Contemplate it, think about it, read it, say it out loud, tell it to others, enjoy it, and chew on it.

I loved my grandpa’s dairy farm when I was a kid.  One of the most amazing things about cows is that they are always chewing.  Watch them sometime and you’ll see their mouths going as they chew, chew, chew all day long!  Meditation is like that when we chew on God’s Word.

It’s like an amazing song that we hum over and over again yet the melody and the lyrics never get old!  It’s like holding hands with your spouse and loving your time together!  I have to imagine that it is like living in the mountains – where the scenery is always amazing, always breathtaking, no matter how many times you’ve seen it.

The apostle Paul talks about this meditation with some amazing and powerful words: “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. . . and the peace of God will be with you” (Philippians 4:8-9).

What a recipe for being blessed, prosperous and successful.  Throw in the peace of God being with you and how can life get any better than that?!!   Pick me, pick me.  

Isn’t it amazing how much God loves us!  He loves us so much that he gives us free will to do whatever we want.  But he shouts these “secret to success” from the rooftops – because he wants you to live inside his abundance.

Yes, God says, “Be with me.  Rest with me.  Hang out with me.  Talk to me. Let me hold you.  Let me comfort you.  Let me help you be wise.  Knock on my door and I’ll always answer.  Meditate on how much I love you.  Think about whatever is true, honorable, pure, just, lovely, commendable and excellent because I’m inside all those things!  And when you do this so often that it becomes a part of who you are, I’ll bless your socks off and fill you with my peace!”  What an amazing God we have!
