THIS is What Sin Does to Our Hearts (Psalm 95 and Hebrews 3)
“If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Psalm 95 and Hebrews 3). We are always extra smart when we pay close attention to anything written in both the Old and New Testaments.
Just imagine all the divorces and broken relationships – all from hardened heart disease! Just as hardening of the arteries can slowly kill us, hardened hearts and minds that refuse to bend can slowly kill relationships too.
You know, God loves us so much that he gives us the freedom to have a soft or hard heart. He will never force us to love him, but instead, will always honor our choices, no matter which direction we choose to go.
And just as God gave us indicators, like high blood pressure, so we can be wary of hardening arteries, hardening heart signs can often include:
- Making choices that are contrary to what we know is right
- Thinking about things that would not be pleasing to God
- Getting easily excited, worried, or angry
- Having rough or harsh words
Worse than that, hardened hearts can quickly get harder. Like making oatmeal without enough water. We harden up and it becomes even harder to get soft again.
When these symptoms are present, God urges us to follow his advice right away, just like we would if we had hardening of our arteries. His prescription includes:
- If today you hear his voice. . . Which means to listen for God’s voice!
- Encourage one another – it’s an easy way to exercise our faith every day!
- Choose to persevere in your faith when things go wrong.
