How often do you think about God’s will in your life?
When was the last time you wanted something so bad that you talked about it and maybe even dreamt about it?
Now ask, when was the last time you really wanted something that God wants? If I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve ever wanted something for God as much as I’ve wanted something for myself. And I don’t think I’m alone.
My guess is that most of us have struggled with the “Thy will be done” part of the Lord’s Prayer because we simply don’t ask “What is God’s will?” But mostly, we want to be in control of our own lives.
I. I. I. It’s funny how I want to be in charge of my life even though I have virtually no control at all. When my dad was an old man he suffered from prostate problems and told me, “I don’t have any control. When I have to go pee, I have to go pee right now.”
We all have so little control of our lives. We couldn’t help when we were born, and we have no jurisdiction over when we die. Jesus even said, “Which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life?”
As Jesus sweat blood in the garden of Gethsemane, he could see the soldiers marching down the hill from Jerusalem toward him. Yet in the midst of this struggle he lived out his own prayer model as he prayed: “My father if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. But not as I will, but as you will.”
