GROWING IN CHRIST – How to Be a Good and Faithful Servant – Daily Devotional
The advertisement for a well-paying position had only one prerequisite: “EXPERIENCE REQUIRED.” A man and a woman – each with ten years of experience applied for the job. On paper they both knew the company systems and computer programs. They each carried the same license and had identical training credentials.
But during the man’s interview, we sensed that he only had the same skill level as a one-year employee. It was like he got to the one-year point, and simply repeated that same level of skill for the next ten years.
The woman had a much greater command of her work related vocabulary. She understood the nuances of the business and the fine print regarding competitors. Not surprisingly, she came with a healthy sales resume and multiple letters of recommendation from clients and previous bosses.
The difference? The man simply went to work to get a paycheck while the woman went to work on herself. The man saw his job as “the grindstone” while the woman saw it as “her passion.”
She said, “One way or the other, I’m going to be working for the next 30 years. If I’m the very best I can be – I’ll get to take on tougher and more interesting assignments so my work never gets boring. Ultimately, I become the go-to girl and get paid more because everyone needs me. And I’ll have more fun at work.”
Jesus once described heaven by telling a story about a master who was pleased with one of his workers. The master said, “Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Matt25:23
Notice that the master never said, “well done – you deserve a break.” Instead he said, “You’ve done so good that I’m going to give you even more work!” What an amazing prescription to truly “come and share in your master’s happiness!”
