Psalm 19 – How to OVERCOME Negative Thoughts!
No one likes it when their mind spins into a gutter of negative thoughts – the kind that make us afraid, offended, or judgmental. And what should we do when terrible thoughts cause us to lose sleep, feel overwhelmed, or say hurtful things we regret. In this video, you’ll discover God’s 3000-year-old secret that’s hidden in this amazing Psalm to help you overcome these negative thoughts.
Just as in the most beautiful poetry, we can imagine the author of the Psalms contemplating the mysteries of the sun, moon, stars and sky. It’s as if his pen cannot contain itself as he writes, “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1). The author goes on to say that without uttering a word. . . the sun, moon and stars are praising God, all the time, and for everyone to see. What an incredible, bigger than life, heavenly start to this Psalm!
Then the poem changes focus to talk about God’s Word – and how it too, speaks to us and brings joy to our hearts. What an amazing parallel to the beauty found in the heavens. How God’s Word revives our souls, gives insight, and brings joy to our hearts. How God’s Word is sweeter than the purest honey – even honey dripping from the comb (Psalm 19:10).
So far, this Psalm has set the table and delivered a rich feast to us. A feast of the bigness, and power and beauty of God. And now, once we can see these truths, we are ready for the desert – the secret to controlling our thoughts and having true freedom. This secret is so simple and so powerful it can be easy to miss. Are you ready?
The Psalms says the crowning excellency of God’s Word is that it teaches and instructs us – and staying inside God’s Word, obeying God’s Word, is a like a virtue – a great reward unto itself. And when we spend time in God’s Word, it allows us to ask God to keep us from hidden faults, to help us discern, and to keep us from sins that rule over us and control us.
There it is in a nutshell: Spending time in God’s Word helps us to control our thoughts, so we can be free! Free! Free from sin. Free from darkness. Free not only from willful sins, but free from our own hidden faults. Free! What a simple, yet incredible way to live!
And when we live inside this freedom, inside this time with God, we cannot help but to yearn for the same words that conclude this beautiful Psalm: “May the words of my mouth, and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).
Yes! God wants his Word to empower your life. Let’s pray them again: “May the words of my mouth, and the thoughts of my heart be pleasing to you, O Lord, my rock and my redeemer” (Psalm 19:14).
Could there be a better way to live!
