Psalm 23:5 – My Cup Overflows – Daily Devotionals
Psalm 23:5 is not just a beautiful passage, but a personal invitation from God to experience his abundant provision and care. Verse five says, “You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”
This verse is so much more than poetry or rich imagery. It is filled with dramatic meaning that can bless your life right now! Watch to the end because its powerful words are meant for you!
As we can all imagine the preparations for a big Thanksgiving meal, here we see God preparing a table for us. . . Notice how it is God who prepares the table for us and not the other way around! God is the one preparing the feast. God is the one who is inviting us to rest and find peace and nourishment in his presence. We are called to be his guest of honor and all we need do is accept the invitation!
More than a feast at a table, this imagery represents the joy God is preparing for us – and strikingly, the table is set in the presence of our enemies! Here we see no doubt, that even in the midst of danger, problems, and opposition, God is with us, providing for us and protecting us. It is a reminder that no matter what we may be facing in life, we can trust in God’s goodness and faithfulness to see us through.
And when we do! When we finally give our lives to God, despite all the enemies and worries surrounding us. . . When we finally give our time to God, despite all the demands made on us… When we truly decide to rest in God’s presence, oh wow, that is when we are blessed.
Yes, when we finally realize GOD WANTS TO BLESS US and anoint our heads with oil. . . THAT IS WHEN OUR CUP WILL OVERFLOW WITH HIS BLESSINGS. Blessings that include peace, love and joy – no matter what our enemies are saying or doing. No matter if things are going right or wrong. No matter what worries may be pressing in. God’s peace is one that surpasses our understanding.
This is the picture of what God Almighty wants to give us when we truly decide to sit at his table and rest in his presence!
What an amazing gift. And yes, it is a gift. The question is, will you and I accept his invitation? Please say this prayer with me. “Dear Lord, Jesus, I want to put aside the noise and demands of life, so I can rest with you at your table. I want to give my life to you.” Can you feel His peace when you say that prayer!
