DID JESUS CLAIM TO BE GOD? – What is the Truth? – Daily Devotional
I like a good, honest and open-minded debate but for the life of me, I cannot hardly understand why God gave me only one mouth!
Now I love to eat – and love to talk – so in our complex world of multiple truths, why can’t I believe I have two mouths? And who are you to criticize me if I try putting food in my belly button or use a straw in my ear to suck down a beverage! What would you say if I said, “How can you be so intolerant?”
Yes, we seem to live in a world where “Your truth is your truth and my truth is mine” so let’s be blunt and talk about Jesus, who said, “I am the way, the truth and the life.” John 14:6 NIV. Notice how he did not say, “I am a truth” or “I am one of the ways.” He claimed to be the as in the only – singular – truth and way to God. Jesus also said, “I am the light of the world.” John 9:5 NIV Again, he never claimed to be a light, but said he is the light.
Likewise, in the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus asked the soldiers, “‘Who are you looking for?’ When they answered, ‘Jesus from Nazareth’ Jesus said, ‘I AM.’” John 18:4-5 This is clearly a claim to be God because everyone knew how God told Moses his name was “I AM.” Exodus 3:13-15
Yes – “I AM” is the name of Almighty God. No wonder that “When Jesus told them, ‘I AM,’ these hardened soldiers “backed away and fell to the ground.” John 18:6 ISV God’s name is not “One of many” nor “I WAS” nor is he competing for a throne like the ancient Greek gods.
Like the fact that we have only one mouth, it is a pure fact that Jesus made the claim to be God! It is not narrow thinking, but a fact of who Jesus said he is. It is a fact that I believe.
Yes, the more that I learn, study and think about Jesus, the more and more I am amazed at him. The more I fall in love with him. The more I want to be with him. And as I am more with him, my peace and joy continues to grow.
If you’d like more. . . More God. More peace and joy. If you’d like to go deeper in knowledge and truth about God, I would love to recommend Timothy Keller’s incredible book, “The Reason For God.” If you have real God questions and want to know the truth, this is a great place to start!Your Content Goes Here
