THE WORD OF GOD – Where Can You Flee When Trouble Comes – Daily Devotional
I’ll never forget the day I poured a gallon of gasoline onto a giant pile of wet wood, just to help me start a fire.
My match never touched the gasoline. In fact, it was barely out of my hand when the shock of ignition threw a stack of logs into the air and tossed me hard onto my back. I had unknowingly made a bomb of gasoline fumes. No pun intended, but can you imagine how shocked I was that raw air contained shock-waves with that much power.
There are a lot of things in life that carry powerful shock-waves – especially if we get too close. Things like pornography or greed certainly jump to mind. Or how about those whose lives are blown up by addictions to alcohol, drugs, gambling or video games?
The funny thing is that most of these work the opposite of gasoline. Instead of an explosion that cuts and burns, Satan uses deceptive tactics to reach out and grab you to pull you closer and closer to destruction.
It’s no wonder that the Bible urges us to flee from sin. Some sins are so dangerous that you simply cannot mess around – you must flee and escape – right now. Flee is a strong word. For your soul to thrive you need to be ready to flee. Fleeing involves readiness, determination and speed.
So where should we flee – but to the word of God. The word of God is a razor-sharp weapon that can shield us from deadly shock waves of destruction.
For today, I’d like to ask you to thoughtfully read Matthew chapter 7. It’s just one short chapter in the Bible, but as the conclusion of Jesus’ sermon on the mount, it is packed with power and purpose.
God’s word is a strong tower. A mighty fortress. Where else would be a better place to flee!
