What Does Praying for Others Do?
Have you wondered about praying for others? What are the real benefits for both them and us? Let’s look at the power of prayer for others inside a short story that will help these answers come alive.
I watched as my boss yelled and threw his hands in the air, totally exasperated at my co-worker, Amy! Everyone in the office watched him scream, then storm out and slam the door. As co-workers merged to comfort Amy, one of them blurted, “I’d never talk to him again!” while another fumed, “If he was my boss, I’d quit!” Everyone was clearly offended.
Amy’s quiet cry stopped almost right away when she whispered, “Let’s pray!” I’ll never forget her next words. “Dear Jesus, I am so thankful that you have forgiven me of my mistakes and sins. Please help us all to forgive our boss, and we ask you to forgive our boss as well.”
After a brief pause she continued, “Lord we also ask you to help our boss so he can forgive us, and not become angry or offended when we make mistakes. Please help us all not to become offended and bitter, but stronger and better.” When she finished her prayer, silence overcame the room.
Probably one of the hardest commands Jesus ever gave can be found when he said, “I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:44). Isn’t it amazing how Jesus knows when we forgive others and pray for them, that we ourselves find the most freedom!
When Amy stopped to pray, this caused everyone to stop, pause and think, which took away the instant emotions of fear and anger. At the same time, instead of insisting on her rights, Amy changed the focus to being in right relationship.
I think Amy’s prayer was one of the most remarkable examples of true Christianity, working right through the heat of the moment, that I have ever seen. It gave everyone an immediate sense of peace and hope in a situation that could have exploded into anger and regret.
Prayer for others is indeed powerful. Without a doubt, it always causes us – the person who is saying the prayer – to take our minds off ourselves – which by itself is a huge win in our own desire for growth.
There is no more time to suffer in anger, sadness, unforgiveness, or fear – not even for one more day! If you’re ready to stop listening to Satan’s lies, click the button below, and start living your new life of happiness today.
