GOD’S WISDOM – More Precious than Gold – Daily Devotions

Oh, the precious and vast wisdom of God! Can we even begin to imagine such knowledge and understanding? How do we get more of it? And let’s ask, could there be anything – anything – more important, more priceless or worth more than God’s wisdom?

In our modern world, some might say that fame is most important of all. Others might hold up power to be supreme. Of course, there are plenty who chase after fun and excitement. And some would argue that diamonds, riches or even gold is the most valuable of all.

Interestingly, the search and quest for God’s wisdom, and the search and quest for gold are both laced throughout history. From the conquistadors, to the California forty-niners, to the Klondike gold rush, there is no doubt that “gold fever” has held power over people and had tremendous influence in our lives. Today, during the Olympics we cry, “Go for the gold!” And when someone does well, we say, “They’re worth their weight in gold.” Gold has always been a big thing in our world; so big, in fact, that the Bible mentions “gold” 417 times!

One of the most famous times was when God told King Solomon to ask him for anything. But instead of asking for power, fame, money or gold, Solomon responded, “Give me wisdom and knowledge to be a good ruler over your people” (2 Chr 1:7-12).

Yes, Solomon asked for God’s wisdom because he believed it was more precious than gold. Perhaps he learned this truth from his father, King David, who wrote those exact words: “God’s wisdom is more precious than gold, than much pure gold” (Ps 19:10).

Amazingly, 3000 years after David said these words, we can still prove David was right just by taking a moment to think! All we need to do, is imagine ourselves at the end of our lives. There is no doubt, that within our final days, we won’t be holding onto any gold or bank statements. We won’t be thumping our chest and saying to ourselves, “I made millions” or look at big, important me. Nope. And you can bet your financial planner won’t be at your bedside either.

But I can tell you who will be there: his name is Jesus. And Jesus is the personification of God’s wisdom. By wisdom, Jesus created you and me and all that we see. Jesus is the Word of God made flesh. When Jesus was born, the law of God, and all that the Old Testament was meant to teach us, became a Person. A person named Jesus. Yes, Jesus is Wisdom! Jesus is more desirable than health, long life, fame, mansions, and even the finest gold!

So the question today – for you and for me – is so very important. It’s simply, what do you seek? Are you a gold seeker? A pleasure seeker? Do you hunt for sex, power or fame?

With all this in mind, let’s hear how gently God is calling us as he says, “My son, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, then you will. . . find the knowledge of God. For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; He stores up sound wisdom for the upright (Proverbs 2:1)

Once again let’s ask, do you have gold fever, or God fever? Do you get up, and go, go, go for the gold? Or do you wake up praising God and truly seek his wisdom? Jesus said, “Wherever your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Mt 6:21). A few minutes later, I’ll bet he looked into his disciples’ eyes and couldn’t help but smile when he said, “Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and everything you need will be added unto you” (Mt 6:33).
